Features
Because of the large amount of current required by each gas sensor, the hazardous gas detection system requires an external Power Supply (300 mA each, which exceeds what the rack power supplies can provide). The external power supply connects to each I/O card.
It monitor regulates the current and sends it to each of the six sensors through the I/O card. The system may also include relay modules that can be programmed to change state to enable the trip or shutdown of machines or processes, to generate audible and/or visible alarms, or to protect both human life and machine assets.

Monitor
For each channel, the 3500/63 Hazardous Gas Detection monitor measures % LEL as well as the number of days since the last calibration.
The system protects by constantly comparing combustible gas concentrations in the vicinity of the sensors to configured setpoints for each channel. The Cal Status Danger alarm is always set to 90 days and cannot be changed, though the alarm can be disabled.
The Cal Status Alert alarm can be configured and deactivated by the user.

Sensor
The approved 350800 hazardous gas sensor is used in the Hazardous Gas Detection System. When connected to the Hazardous Gas Detection Module, this sensor consists of a catalytic bead and a reference bead that form a Wheatstone bridge.
The sensor's catalytic bead is impregnated with a catalyst that promotes oxidation, whereas the reference bead is treated to inhibit oxidation.
The electrical current from the monitor heats the beads to the temperature required for gas oxidation at the catalytic bead. When gas is present, this oxidation raises the temperature of the catalytic bead above the temperature of the reference bead, increasing resistance and unbalancing the bridge.
The imbalance is proportional to the combustible gas concentration.

Configuration
To function properly, the 3500/63 Hazardous Gas Detection Module requires a valid configuration.
From left to right, the slots in the rack are numbered 0 to 15. The power supplies for the 3500 rack occupy slot 0 and the Transient Data Interface (TDI) or 3500/20 Rack Interface Module (RIM) occupies slot 1. Monitoring positions are slots 2 through 15.
The modules can be installed in any of the monitoring positions. To provide enough power to the sensors, an external power supply is required. The TMR TDI (with standard Hasz gas monitors) and dual power supplies are used in GE gas turbine applications.
